I’ve written a serial fiction for Radio 4. It’s called Operation Rex and it’s on every night this week at 1045pm, if you’re lying there wishing for air-conditioning. Or you can binge it all on BBC Sounds.
It’s about another hidden history, a moment I found in a footnote and have not been able to stop thinking about. It’s set right at the start of World War II as the world teeters on the brink of fascism and features a crying Prime Minister, a flock of liberated canaries, a Glaswegian housekeeper who won't let you sleep in and one brave gay boy and his even braver Westie.
It’s read beautifully by John Paul Hurley and produced brilliantly by Eilidh McCreadie. It’s very much inspired by Lucy and Jock, the Westies I grew up with.
